What is Nursing Home Abuse?
“Abuse” is a word no one wants to hear. When associated with the vulnerable elderly, abuse is especially difficult to come to terms with. Sadly, there are people who take advantage of, exploit, and mistreat senior citizens for their own personal gains. Ending nursing home abuse begins with recognizing what it is, and how it looks. The more you know about the subject, the better able you will be to detect it at your loved one’s nursing home. The four main types of elder abuse are:
- Physical. Any event or condition that causes the nursing home resident physical harm. This includes physical hitting, slapping, scratching, pinching, or burning, as well as physical harms such as elderly neglect or misuse of restraints.
- Psychological. Psychological, mental, or emotional abuse may not have physical signs, but they can be just as harmful to the elderly. Mental abuse can involve yelling or berating, humiliating, criticizing, or otherwise making the patient feel ashamed. Look for behavioral changes in your loved one as a possible sign of mental abuse.
- Sexual. Sexual abuse describes any form of unwanted sexual advances, touching, attention, or exploitation. The most common victims of elderly sexual abuse are residents who have cognitive compromises such as dementia, and those who are unable to express their wishes.
- Financial. Elder financial exploitation or abuse is when a staff member, family member, friend, or caregiver takes advantage of a senior citizen to compromise the person’s financial status. Look for theft, money missing from bank accounts, unusual gifts or donations, or unexpected changes in wills.
Elder neglect is also a problem that plagues Southern California’s nursing homes. Elder neglect can happen due to inadequate staffing, dirty facilities, lack of nutritious meals, or lack of resident hygiene or medical attention. Neglect is often unintentional, but it can cause bedsores, malnutrition, poor hygiene, injuries, illnesses, infections, and dehydration. As soon as you detect signs of possible elder abuse, take your loved one out of the facility and to a safe place. Call the police and report your suspicions. Then, contact us.
